Reduction of the rotation period of Uruguay's blue helmets
25 September 2023
La rotación bajará de doce a seis meses.
Uruguay received the official communication from the United Nations Department of Peace Operations regarding the acceptance of the proposal from the Ministry of National Defense of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay to reduce the rotation period of personnel serving operational roles in peacekeeping missions from twelve to six months, as a way to promote greater participation of female military personnel.
This request arises from the Assessment of Opportunities and Barriers to Women's Participation in Peace Operations (MOWIP), conducted in the Uruguayan Armed Forces in 2020 and published in 2021. The identified barriers support the project "Strategies and Actions for Increasing the Significant Participation of Women from the Uruguayan Armed Forces in Peace Operations," which is funded by the Elsie Initiative and has been implemented in the country since October 2022, under the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and its strategic partners, UN Women and the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI).
